Jamaica Boxing Board (JBB) general secretary Leroy Brown has been assigned by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to be an International Official (ITO) at the African Olympic Qualifying event in Casablanca, Morocco from April 27 to May 6.

This will be his second assignment to a qualifying tournament as he was also an ITO at the Asian tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan from April 3-13.

Brown, who is a former Olympic Judge, is one of the 13 international technical officials in the Americas who are qualified to be officials at AIBA Elite tournaments.

The ITO performs a variety of functions at these tournaments, and these include, supervising the referees and judges, and assessing their performances during the tournament, acting as members of the jury, being responsible for the draw, weigh-in and medical examinations, managing all the equipment that is used in the tournament, ensuring that boxers and trainers adhere to the competition rules, including the strict time schedules that are necessary for these types of events.

There are 250 places available for men in the summer Olympic Games to be held in London, England in July and August. Some boxers qualified at the World Championships that were held in Baku, Azerbaijan earlier this year, after which five other qualifying tournaments were assigned to Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania.

Those in Asia, Europe and Oceania are now completed and the qualifier for the Americas takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from May 4-13.

The qualifying tournament for women to fill the 36 places available will take place in China from May 9-20. Jamaica will be sending teams to Rio and China.

Soccer’s governing body did not give any further details on the withdrawal of Bahamas who had been due to play in Group C in the second round of the CONCACAF zone along with Panama, Dominica and Nicaragua.

FIFA said the group would now be contested by three teams with the winners progressing to the next stage of qualifying.

Bahamas beat Turks and Caicos Islands 10-0 on aggregate in a two-leg preliminary tie, Lesly St Fleur scoring five goals in a 6-0 first-leg win.

They were the biggest risers in last month’s FIFA rankings, leaping from 197th place to 152nd.

The Bahamas Tribune said the withdrawal was caused by the unavailability of a new Chinese-built 23,000 capacity stadium which the federation had planned to use for home games.

It added that although the stadium was handed over by the Chinese government in June, approach roads, car parks, landscaping and sewerage had not been completed.

The report said the alternative would have been to play home matches at neutral venues but the cost would have been prohibitive.

Trinidad and Tobago table tennis ace Dexter St Louis and Rheann Chung won the Mixed Doubles crown as the 53rd Senior Championships continued in Guyana.

Also, TT grabbed silver in both the Men’s and Women’s Doubles as well as the Men and Women’s team event.

The St Louis/Chung combination took on Dominica Republic’s Eva Brito and Juan Vila in the final and blew them away in three sets to clinch this country’s first gold medal at the championships

The TT duo won the first set 11-6 and made it 2-0 with an 11-4 win in the second. Their rivals put up a better fight in the third but Chung and St Louis prevailed 12-10. The French-based players dropped just two sets throughout the tournament, winning their semi-final match against Dominica Republic’s J Valdes and Emil Santos 3-2 (6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7).

They were victorious in the previous two matches 3-0.

In the Men’s Doubles final, St Louis and Curtis Humphreys were no match for Dominica Republic’s J Vila and Emil Santos, losing 5-11, 7-11, 9-11.

The pair had earlier beaten Guyana’s Paul David and Idi Lewis 3-2 (11-2, 10- 12, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6) in the “semis”.

In the women’s final, Chung and Aleena Edwards lost 1-3 (9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 7-11) against Dominica’s E Brito and J Valdes.

On Sunday, Dominican Republic edged TT 3-2 in the men’s final while the TT women went under to the same opponents by a similar score-line in round robin play.

In men’s action, St Louis was beaten in five sets by Emil Santos, but rallied to get past Vila 3-0.

Curtis Humphreys got past Samuel Malvez 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9 but TT’s Michael Nanton lost to both Vila and Santos.

Earlier, TT’s ping pong men beat Guadeloupe and Guyana 3-1 respectively to top Group I with a perfect record.

St Louis won his matches against Gregory Cuirassier (11-6, 12-10, 11-4) and Jean-Michael Boissard (11-4, 11-3, 11-5) in the tie with Guadeloupe while Humphreys breezed past Boissard 11-4, 11-5, 11-3. TT’s lone casualty was Michael Nanton who went under to Cedric Cideme 4-11, 14-12, 8-11, 6-11.

St Louis was again in ripping form against Guyana with comfortable victories against Idi Lewis and Christopher Franklin.

St Louis slammed Lewis in three games 12-10, 11-5, 11-8 and needed just one more to beat Christopher Franklin 11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5.

Humphreys got the better of Paul David in five gritty games 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10. Reeza Burke lost his match versus Franklin 9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 8- 11.

In the women’s team final, Chung beat Johenny Valdez 11-7, 11-8, 11-7 but lost to Brito in four sets.

Reigning All-Jamaica Men’s champion, Chris Binnie, regained the Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Senior Men’s title after toppling the defending champion Richard Chin of Guyana...

Reigning All-Jamaica Men’s champion, Chris Binnie, regained the Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Senior Men’s title after toppling the defending champion Richard Chin of Guyana 2-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-5 on Wednesday in Grand Cayman.

The match got off to a shaky start for Binnie who only won two points while losing a lop-sided first game. However, the Jamaican quickly regained form to dish out a decisive beating to his Guyanese rival.

The victory was sweet revenge for Binnie who took the senior CASA title in 2009 but lost it to Chin the following year.

Personal triumph

“This win is a personal triumph for me because one of my goals for this year was to take back my Caribbean men’s title which I had lost to Richard in 2010,” Binnie said.

“Last year, I didn’t win a single game when Richard beat me and this time around I got off to a nervous start when I lost the first game, but I just kept my head and stayed focused, and there was no looking back after that,” he added.

The Caribbean Championship caps off a dream year for Binnie who has been steadily adding local and international titles to his resume. In February, he won the deciding game which secured a 13th straight US National College Championship for his school, Trinity College. At the end of the college season he was named most valuable player by Trinity and was also listed among the All American College Squash Players and the All Academic American College Players for 2010-2011.

And just last month, Binnie won the All Jamaica senior men’s championship without dropping a game. The 21-year-old is now looking to join the men’s professional circuit once he finishes university next year.

The 2011 CASA senior championships is now under way in Grand Cayman. Focus now shifts to the team competition which started yesterday and ends tomorrow.

Jamaica’s Ashley lifts WBC title – Sports – Jamaica Gleaner – Monday | July 25, 2011

This is a dream come true,” said an elated Alicia Ashley yesterday, as she savoured her Saturday-night victory over Texan Christina Ruiz, at Hunts Point in the Bronx, New York. Jamaican-born Ashley defeated Ruiz by unanimous decision in the 10-round fight to take home the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight title.

Ashley, whose record is now 17 wins, nine defeats and one draw, made an unsuccessful challenge for the title on August 20, 2009, when she dropped a controversial majority decision to Marcela Acuna, in Argentina. Since then, she said, her goal had been to take this particular title home.

“The WBC title is the one most highly regarded, and that is why I wanted to win it. For me, this is mission accomplished.”

Her opponent, Ruiz, who entered the ring with a 6-3-1 record, with four knock-out victories, was seen as a dangerous power puncher. Ashley said that she was aware of this, and, as a result, was wary when the fight started.

Things turned quickly during the fight.

“The strange thing is that when she caught me, I did not have any problem absorbing her power punches, but after I landed some solid left hooks and an uppercut early in the fight, I could see that she was hurt, and backed away. She became very cautious after that, and I did not have any problems with her. I used my quickness to good advantage and she could not find any answers. She just could not catch me with anything solid, and I think that she only won one round,’ Ashley said.

The judges agreed with her, as one judge scored the fight 100-90, another 99-91 and the other 98-91, a clear indication that Ashley was the superior fighter on Saturday night.

When asked what was next for her, she said, “Other people want to go to Disneyland, I want to go to Jamaica. I have not been home for a while and I want to get there very soon. The next dream to be fulfilled for me is a title fight in Jamaica.”

U-19 rugby team lose to Cayman in NACRA final | The Trinidad Guardian

T&T was beaten 4-2 in a kickoff by host nation Cayman Islands after both sides ended the match, deadlocked at 8-8, in the final of the North America, Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Under-19 Championships 2011. At the Truman Bodden Stadium on Saturday evening, the young “Calypso Warriors” took an 8-0 advantage with a try scored by Joseph Anderson and a convergent scored by Jamal Stewart. However, both efforts were canceled out by Cayman Islands which responded with another try and penalty in the final play of regulation time. Cayman then held their defensive line, allowing T&T no chance for a further breakthrough, taking the match to a standstill at the end of full time. Cayman then proved to be the better kicking side, leaving T&T in the dust after the “Calypso Warriors” found the target on only two occasions to Cayman’s four.

The U-19 boys were 22-19 winners over Mexico on Wednesday which earned them a place in the final. Carlton St Clair, Melville Eastman scored tries, while Jamal Steward took points with a couple of converted efforts. On Monday, T&T defeated Jamaica 20-7. T&T lead 15-0 at half time with an assertive performance but slumped to a more sloppy display in the second half. Olton Charles impressed with three tries while Brandon Scotland also touched the white line with a try of his own.

T&T was more impressive in the Women’s final, as the team lifted the trophy following a resounding victory over Cayman Islands 50-0 on Friday.
