The Caribbean mined 4 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals at the 5th IAAF World Athletics Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Stellar golden performances were displayed by Jamaica’s Dexter Lee in the boys 100m and Ramone McKenzie in the boys 200m, Cuba’s Dailenis Alcantara in the girls triple jump, and Barbados’ Shane Brathwaite in the boys octathlon.
Brathwaite became Barbados first ever World Champion in any age group, with a personal best record of 6261 points.

2012. That’s the year the extension of sponsorship runs to for WICB by mobile giants Digicel. Yesterday at a press conference Bruce Aanensen, CEO of the WICB announced the extension as well as other emoluments to the tune of US$4 million from which there will be no deductions. Get details here.

The T&T team pulled out a sterling performance winning 2 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze to lead the pack of Caribbean countries coming out of the final day of the Pan American Junior track and field championship which ended in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sunday. One can’t help but to expect a black eye when boxing but SMABA (St. Maarten Amateur Boxing Association) and the St. Maarten Government got more than they bargained for when they were called upon to host the 2007 Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association Tournament. Sadly the SMABA and the Government got their signals crossed and the tournament had to be canceled. Apparently arrangements for accommodations had not been finalized and the teams of 19 countries number more than 200 individuals were left in limbo re a place to lay their weary heads.
