Trinidad and Tobago table tennis ace Dexter St Louis and Rheann Chung won the Mixed Doubles crown as the 53rd Senior Championships continued in Guyana.

Also, TT grabbed silver in both the Men’s and Women’s Doubles as well as the Men and Women’s team event.

The St Louis/Chung combination took on Dominica Republic’s Eva Brito and Juan Vila in the final and blew them away in three sets to clinch this country’s first gold medal at the championships

The TT duo won the first set 11-6 and made it 2-0 with an 11-4 win in the second. Their rivals put up a better fight in the third but Chung and St Louis prevailed 12-10. The French-based players dropped just two sets throughout the tournament, winning their semi-final match against Dominica Republic’s J Valdes and Emil Santos 3-2 (6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7).

They were victorious in the previous two matches 3-0.

In the Men’s Doubles final, St Louis and Curtis Humphreys were no match for Dominica Republic’s J Vila and Emil Santos, losing 5-11, 7-11, 9-11.

The pair had earlier beaten Guyana’s Paul David and Idi Lewis 3-2 (11-2, 10- 12, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6) in the “semis”.

In the women’s final, Chung and Aleena Edwards lost 1-3 (9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 7-11) against Dominica’s E Brito and J Valdes.

On Sunday, Dominican Republic edged TT 3-2 in the men’s final while the TT women went under to the same opponents by a similar score-line in round robin play.

In men’s action, St Louis was beaten in five sets by Emil Santos, but rallied to get past Vila 3-0.

Curtis Humphreys got past Samuel Malvez 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9 but TT’s Michael Nanton lost to both Vila and Santos.

Earlier, TT’s ping pong men beat Guadeloupe and Guyana 3-1 respectively to top Group I with a perfect record.

St Louis won his matches against Gregory Cuirassier (11-6, 12-10, 11-4) and Jean-Michael Boissard (11-4, 11-3, 11-5) in the tie with Guadeloupe while Humphreys breezed past Boissard 11-4, 11-5, 11-3. TT’s lone casualty was Michael Nanton who went under to Cedric Cideme 4-11, 14-12, 8-11, 6-11.

St Louis was again in ripping form against Guyana with comfortable victories against Idi Lewis and Christopher Franklin.

St Louis slammed Lewis in three games 12-10, 11-5, 11-8 and needed just one more to beat Christopher Franklin 11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5.

Humphreys got the better of Paul David in five gritty games 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10. Reeza Burke lost his match versus Franklin 9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 8- 11.

In the women’s team final, Chung beat Johenny Valdez 11-7, 11-8, 11-7 but lost to Brito in four sets.

TT’s Linda Partap-Boodhan got the better of Kircia Diaz. However, national champion Aleena Edwards was defeated by both Brito and Valdez

Foster, Dibbs repeat as national TT champs – - JamaicaObserver.com

NATIONAL champions Yvonne Foster and Joseph Dibbs continued their dominance of local table tennis by adding the lucrative Flow/Superior Parts-sponsored 2010 Extreme Spin Open Singles events to their collection of prizes this year at the YMCA Auditorium in Kingston on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Stephen Grant won the Mandingo Roots Tonic Wine-sponsored Hard Bat competition by beating Michael Cai 3-1 in the final.

The Flow-sponsored Men’s Singles was played over seven sets from the semi-final on with the Superior Parts-sponsored Women’s Open Singles played over seven sets in the final only.

It was the final tournament which called curtains on the 2010 table tennis season and both Foster and Dibbs were in fine touch and played unbeaten throughout. Foster accounted for Nigerian player Patricia Nikiru Ojie in the final in straight sets 4-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-7 and 12-10) and was happy that she came out on top.

“I was expecting a lot of competition and I got it. So overall I’m pleased with my performance. At one point I had to tell myself that I am the best after she (Patricia) demonstrated that she herself was a fine player and wanted to win,” said Foster.

When Ojie lost it cast a dark shadow over her countenance and she was very close to tears. Said Ojie: “I am disappointed that I lost, I thought that I can beat her but I felt stressed. It was a new setting for me and I was unsettled playing before an audience that I have not yet got accustomed to. However, I think the next time I play her I will do much better.”

Meanwhile, Dibbs had a similar straight sets (11-2, 11-4, 11-5, 11-4) win over the hag-ridden Phillip Drummond, who looked totally unprepared for the occasion.

In the women’s semis, Foster 17, the six-time national champion and Sixth-Form student at Meadowbrook High School, booked her place in the final by beating Shenique Clare (UWI) in straight sets 3-0; 15-13, 11-7, 11-6, while Oje beat her sister Akpoebi Ghamorai also of Nigeria, 15-13, 11-7, 6-11, 2-11, 11-7.

In men’s semi-final play Dibbs squeezed past Dale Parham 4-2 (9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 12-10, 7-11 11-9), while Drummonds outlasted Kane Watson 4-3.

It was the richest tournament ever to be held among local players with Dibbs pocketing $100,000 for winning the men’s singles, while Foster also in penetrating form taking, home $35,000.

Play was staged over two days and catered for a wide range of categories, which were well supported, especially at the junior levels.

While the big blast was the Open Singles, competition was added to the programme to include boys and girls play from Under-10 to Under-18 levels, an Over-40 competition and the innovative Hard Bat competition which was played competitively for the first time in a tournament in Jamaica.

This went down well although many players stayed away because of the poor lighting condition and uneven surface of both floor and tables which existed at the playing venue.

Darian King, as his name suggests reined supreme adding another title to his belt as he won the men’s open division of the Barbados National Bank Tennis Championships on Sunday. The #1 seed showed why he is the brightest talent for many years on the tennis scene as he beat Davis Cup veteran Bernard Frost 6-3, 6-1.

Frost having a great tournament taking out two ranked juniors Seanon Williams in the first round and Devard Wharton in the quarterfinals, then going on to beat Davis Cup competitor Ryan Moseley in the semis, found the going much tougher against the all round game and athleticism of King. The match produced some high level tennis with long rallies and King had to concentrate to overcome the experience of Frost but Frost’s usual serve and volley game was no match for King’s decisive passing shots.

In ladies doubles Sherry Belle continued her winning form teaming up
with daughter Kareike Wharton to win the semis against Rosie Roach and junior Cherese Slocombe winning the match 6-2, 6-2. She is also in the final of the ladies 35’s singles against Rosie Roach and will play Gabriella Lopez in the open final.

Dr Raymond Forde and partner Julian Baird had their second consecutive win over junior doubles pairs emerging victorious over Jackson Kerr and Mykell Reifer. In the first round they took out Yannick Hooper and Devard Wharton by the same score. They now meet the #1 seeds Darian and Christopher King in the semi-finals.

The ‘Courtesy Garage Top 8’ also served off as the top 8 players for the year are invited to play off for the title. This year’s invitees match up with Darian King versus Hassani Stewart, Mykell Reifer will play Seanon Williams, Ryan Mosley has an encounter with Devard Wharton and the last match will be between Bernard Frost and Duncan Evanson.

Barbados took the lion share of the spoils in the men’s events when the Caribbean Table Tennis Championships ended at the University of Technology, in Jamaica over the weekend.

Having secured the men’s team title earlier in the week, Barbados added the under 21 title through a victory by Anderson Carrington over Kane Watson of Jamaica, and ended the regional championship on a high with the prestigious men’s singles title after Kevin Farley defeated Remy Delange of Aruba in the final. Farley won 11-3, 11-4, 11-5, 11-6, to triumph in straight games.

Carrington beat Watson 5-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-5, 11-19 in the under 21 final.

While Farley’s victory over the Aruban secured the men’s singles it was his brilliance against the highly rated Trinidadian Dexter St. Louis in the semi final that opened the door to winning the championship.

St. Louis, who is based in France, was the heavy favourite to win the title but Farley, like St. Louis a left handed player, avenged a narrow loss to the talented Trini last season to come out on top this time around and set up a shot at the championship by qualifying for the final.

Farley, a former Caribbean Junior Champion, beat St. Louis 11-8, 2-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-5, 12-10 in a thrilling contest, itself worthy of being a final.

The forty year old St. Louis was the only player from the English speaking Caribbean to qualify for the Beijing Games in August and this victory against such an elite player is one Farley will most likely cherish for a long time.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Rheann Chung, another player based in France, beat Corinne Vallant of Guyana 11-4, 11-4, 11-2, 11-3 to win the women’s singles. Earlier in the week she had led Trinidad and Tobago to victory in the women’s team event. She also joined with Astra Edwards to win the women’s doubles and with St. Louis to win the mixed doubles.

Alex Tertullien of French Guiana won the veteran’s championship with an 11-9, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9 triumph over Ruddy Raga of Aruba.

Jamaica also won a gold medal through Yvonne Foster who beat Ashley Quashie of Trinidad and Tobago 11-8, 12-10, 11-7 to win the women’s under 21 final.
