Trinity College’s Chris Binnie (Kingston, Jamaica) booked a spot in the prestigious CSA All-American Second Team.Trinity finished the 2010-11 season with its 13th straight perfect season at 20-0 and captured its fifth consecutive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship title, its 14th straight Intercollegiate Squash Association Dual Match title, and its 13th consecutive College Squash Association (CSA) National Team Championship crown. The Bantams, coached by Paul Assaiante (17th Season), extended the longest known winning streak in the history of intercollegiate varsity sports to 244 triumphs in a row.

Binnie played No. 4 for the Bantams and went 3-0 in the CSA National Championship Tournament including the national-title-clinching, 3-1 win to give Trinity a 5-4 victory against Yale in the CSA Finals. Binnie was 18-2 record this winter, which tied him for second on the squad in wins and winning percentage, and won two matches to advance to the CSA National Singles Championship Quarterfinals. Binnie was ranked as the No. 13 player in the nation at the end of the year. He finishes his squash career with a 52-5 record, and a Malloy Championship Trophy won at the CSA Singles Championships in 2008-09. Binnie, who will continue to play soccer for the Bantams in the fall, was the U-19 National Champion in his native Jamaica. A graduate of Campion College, he is the son of Gill and Ray Binnie.

T&T boys in CASA final | Trinidad Express Newspaper | Sports

TRINIDAD and Tobago advanced to the boys’ team final when the CASA (Caribbean Area Squash Association) Junior Championships continued Wednesday night in Guyana.

This country’s girls went down against the hosts in the semi-finals, but the boys edged Bermuda 3-2 to reach the title match against the powerful Guyanese.

The big three players were responsible for T&T’s triumph as the Britain-based Kale Wilson and Patrick brothers, Mandela and Nku, won their matches.

Wilson, who was crowned Caribbean under-19 champion during the individual finals on Sunday night, came from behind to edge last year’s champ Micah Franklin 10-12, 11-9, 8-11, 11-2, 11-4.

Mandela was also forced to battle from behind, but his recovery was far more dramatic as the national under-17 champ lost the first two sets before roaring back to deny D’Vario Thompson 8-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-4.

Mandela had also edged Thompson in five sets en route to a runner-up under-17 final in “individuals” Sunday.

Nku, who was beaten in the Caribbean under-15 final as the top seed, cruised past Kion Knights 11-1, 11-5, 11-5, but under-19 player Ryan Bayne and national under-13 champ Jonathan Blanc lost the other two matches in straight sets.

Heavy title favourites Guyana crushed a Jamaican squad, which had lost 3-2 to T&T in the group stage, 5-0 without even dropping a set in the other semi-final.

The final was in progress after press time last night, along with the Jamaica/Bermuda clash for third place.

T&T girls were given no chance against defending champions Guyana and did not even win a match.

National under-19 champ Charlotte Knaggs had upset Victoria Arjoon in the shock of the tournament last Sunday for the Caribbean under-17 title. But the four-time CASA champ gained revenge in a pulsating five-setter 11-8, 9-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9.

National under-17 champ Angelique Jackson and national under-19 runner-up Emily Bones, on vacation from studies in the United States, lost the under-19 matches, while Faith Gillezeau and Gabriella Scott, the national under-15 and 13 champs, respectively, also failed to win a set.

The T&T team were back in action yesterday morning and lost against a three-member Cayman Islands squad for third place.

Knaggs and Scott won by default, but Bones, Jackson and Gillezeau were beaten again.

Then the Guyanese went on to retain their title with anther clinical performance to overwhelm the Jamaicans 4-1.

Defending champion Alyssa Mullings retained the girls’ Under-13 title at the Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Junior Championships, which is currently under way in Georgetown, Guyana.

Mullings easily beat Amanda Haywood of Barbados 11-2, 11-2, 11-6 to take the regional championship for the second consecutive year.

Mullings’ triumph on Sunday follows her impressive performance at the Allied Insurance Brokers All Jamaica Squash Championship last month, where she also took the national Under-13 title.

“Alyssa came into the competition focused and determined to retain her title and her efforts have paid off,” said national junior coach, Karen Anderson.

“It was very clear from her performance that she is at a different level from the rest of her peers across the region, and it will be exciting to see how far she can go in the sport as she matures,” she added.

With her championship win, Mullings has been the top performer so far among the Jamaican contingent at the week-long tournament.

Fourth place

Jamaica’s Under-15 boys’ champion, Jake Mahfood, beat Julian Jervis 9-11, 10-12, 12-10, 11-7 to take fourth place in his age group. In addition, Stephan Morrison and Jonathan Walker finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the Under-13 boys’ competition.

All Jamaica boys Under-17 and Under-19 champion, Ashante Smith, beat Jean-Claude Jeffrey for fifth place in the Under-17 competition and Lauren Mahfood placed sixth in the Under-19 category.

The Jamaicans are now focused on the team competition, where the players made an impressive start, as the boys took on Cayman and won all of their five matches. In the girls’ team competition, Jamaica beat Barbados 4-1.

The championships will run until July 14.
