James Claims 400 Meter Title at NCAA Championships – ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE – University of Alabama Official Athletic Site

In front of a sold-out 11,972 fans at Hayward Field on Friday, the largest crowd in history for the third day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, true freshman Kirani James claimed the NCAA 400 meter title by clocking a time of 45.05. James is the first Alabama male student-athlete to win the event, indoors or outdoors.

“Kirani’s improved so quickly since getting here in January,” head men’s track and field coach Harvey Glance said. “What I like about Kirani the most is that he’s so coachable. He very rarely makes mistakes. He understands his goals and dreams and where he wants to be in this sport.”

James, just 17-years-old, etched his name in NCAA and Alabama history with the 400 meter championship. The Gouyave, Grenada, native is just the second Alabama male to earn All-America honors in the 400 meters, outdoors – Cedric Vaughns earned the honor in 1982 and 1984.

“It was a very competitive race and no one thought I could have won it,” James said. “But I don’t think about getting wins when I compete, I just think about running fast. If I run fast, the wins will come anyway. It’s a big win for me as a freshman. This was my first time at Hayward Field and it was incredible. The kind of respect people here have for track, I haven’t seen anywhere else. I hope I will get to compete here again in the future, but I want to thank all the fans for their support.”

James became the first outdoor NCAA champion for Alabama since 2002 – Ron Bramlett in the 100 meter hurdles and David Kimani in the 5,000 meters. In winning the NCAA title, James had to knock off the No. 3 sprinter in the world in Calvin Smith of Florida, No. 5 Tavaris Tate of Mississippi State and No. 7 Demetrious Pinder of Texas A&M.

“Kirani and I have a great relationship,” Glance said. “He believes in my philosophy and I believe in his focus and dedication. He’s the SEC champion. He’s the NCAA champion and now he wants to go on to the World Junior Championships and grab another title there.”

The first attempt at a Crimson clad national title came in the 800 meter final with junior Fred Samoei. The Mobien, Kenya, native was the first to the break after 100 meters and settled into second by 200 meters, where he would stay until the last 100 meters of the race.

Defending NCAA outdoor champion, 2008 Olympian and hometown favorite Andrew Wheating of Oregon then used his signature finishing kick to surpass Samoei and the field to deafening cheers from the Oregon-filled stadium. Wheating claimed the title with a time of 1:45.69, while Samoei slipped to the back of the pack, finishing eighth with a time of 1:47.84.

Samoei became the first Alabama male student-athlete to earn All-America honors in the 800 meters, outdoors, since Peter Etoot garnered the award in 2005 – Etoot also finished eighth. Samoei is the fourth to earn the honor outdoors in school history.

This is the first year since 2005 that the Alabama men have had two All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

In the team standings wi th only one day of competition rem aining, Alabama is in 12th place with 11 points. It is the highest point total since 2002 for the Alabama men, when the team finished 11th with 21 points. Texas A&M leads the team race with 36 points and is followed by Florida in second with 28 points.

Friday’s Alabama Men’s Results

800 Meter Final (6/11): 8. Fred Samoei – 1:47.84

BBC Sport – F1 – Lewis Hamilton wins Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal

Lewis Hamilton led Jenson Button to a McLaren one-two in a thrilling Canadian Grand Prix after a race-long five-car battle in Montreal.

Hamilton fought with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso throughout, but the Spaniard lost out to Button with 14 laps to go.

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber were also contenders for victory and finished fourth and fifth.

The result puts Hamilton in the championship lead, three points clear of Button, with Webber and Alonso next.

“It’s been a tremendous weekend, fantastic,” said Hamilton. “Things have just gone so well. Tremendous support from the fans and the team did an exceptional job. One of the toughest races of the year. These guys (Button and Alonso) did a fantastic job.

“Traffic was the opportunity for all of us today to get past the guy in front and I capitalised on that.”

The race victory turned on tyre strategy, and a couple of key incidents between Hamilton and Alonso.

Hamilton put himself in a position to win when he passed Alonso on lap 15 while the two were harrying Sebastien Buemi for the lead.

The Swiss Toro Rosso driver had found himself at the head of the field as the differing tyre choices of the main contenders played out in the opening laps.

Alonso got caught on the outside of Buemi going into the hairpin and Hamilton was able to slingshot past him on the long straight down to the final chicane, where Buemi pitted from in front of them, promoting Hamilton into the lead.

But Hamilton could not shake off Alonso and when the McLaren pitted again on lap 26, rejoining in third behind Webber, the Ferrari resumed the lead.

Alonso was due in to the pits on lap 28 for tyres and a fastest lap on lap 27 put him on target to re-pass the McLaren.

But the Ferrari got held up behind a backmarker – Hispania’s Karun Chandhok – and Alonso ended up rejoining behind the McLaren.

At this point, Webber was in the lead, but still needing to pit to change to the softer option tyres, which he had not yet used, with Hamilton, Alonso, Button and Vettel behind him all trying to get to the end on their harder prime tyres.

The Australian pulled out a lead of 11.8 seconds by lap 36, but then his tyres began to go off and Hamilton and Alonso, still circulating nose to tail, began to close in again. Button, with Vettel on his tail, was about four seconds further back.

Hamilton and Alonso caught Webber on lap 48 and Hamilton took the lead into Turn One at the start of lap 50.

Webber pitted for his final set of tyres at the end of the lap, dropping to fifth, and Alonso began to drop away from Hamilton and fall into Button’s clutches.

Another delay behind Chandhok gave Button the chance to take second place into Turn Eight on lap 56. Initially, the two men began to close on Hamilton, but the 2008 world champion put in a couple of quick laps with 10 of the 70 laps to go to deter them from getting any closer.

Alonso was less than a second behind Button for the rest of the race but was unable to pass.

“This was a very difficult type of race because the tyres are so important,” said reigning world champion Button. “You couldn’t drive flat out on the prime every lap, you still had to look after the tyres.

“It was exciting and great to be up at the front and watching the fight between these two (Hamilton and Alonso) was also fun. It was a great race, with different strategies, and it’s made for a hell of a race.”

Alonso added: “It was a good day for us, the car was very competitive and I think we had a good opportunity to win .

“We overtook Lewis thanks to a fantastic pit stop but then lost the position with some traffic. We lost another position to Jenson in the last laps with more traffic, so we lost 10 points.

“When Buemi stopped I lost 2.5secs passing another car and I exited the pits 0.5secs behind Lewis, it was a race decided by small details.

“We are still in the championship but we are moving in the right direction and we are back in the fight.”
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso

Hamilton had led the early laps from pole position but his option tyres began to go off after four or five laps and, with Vettel climbing all over the back of him, he pitted on lap seven.

Alonso came in at the same time and a slow pit stop and getaway by Hamilton and McLaren meant the Ferrari was closing fast as Hamilton accelerated away.

The two went side by side down the pit lane and Alonso managed to sneak ahead.

The Red Bulls assumed first and second positions but they, too, started to run into problems with the harder, prime tyre and they had to pit five laps later.

Webber came in first, and fitted the prime tyre, with Vettel following him a lap later and going for the option.

That put Buemi into the lead, with Alonso and Hamilton closing fast.

Buemi drove a strong race to finish eighth behind the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Robert Kubica’s Renault.

Rosberg’s team-mate Michael Schumacher and the Force Indias of Vitantonio Liuzzi and Adrian Sutil were ninth and 10th in the final points positions.

Sutil passed Michael Schumacher for that position at the final corner, depriving the German legend of a point at the end of a poor weekend.

And Felipe Massa was given a 20-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane which dropped him two places in the result to 17th

Same stage, different cast, but once again Trinidad and Tobago’s Coretta Bruce and Grenadian Damien Daniel retained the overall titles at the 14th annual Eastern Caribbean Bodybuilding Championships, which took place on Saturday night at a packed Cascadia Hotel, St Ann’s.

Daniel, the biggest man on the night, was pushed all the way in the battle for the overall men’s title, but had enough muscle and definition in all areas to just get the better of his main competitor, T&T’s Dechon Durity, who came back after a two-year absence to get the better of a much improved Jarwan Pantin (T&T) in the light-heavyweight division.

Women’s overall champion Bruce will also have to watch out next time for St Lucian Monica Dudley as there was very little between them.

Bruce showed all the hard work she put in on her back and upper-body, but was a little smooth in the legs, while the bigger Dudley also put in some work and had strong legs and abdominal muscles, but was still just short of her peak.

The competition also saw repeat victories for Trinidad and Tobago’s "Spiderman" Neil Diaz (Men’s fitness); Tamara Ribero-Bailey (Body-fitness, Tall Class); and Michelle Alleyne (Body-fitness, Short Class), but like the overall champions they too were pushed to the limit to claim the honours.

And promoter Lawrence "The Beast" Marshall was presented with the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) silver medal for his work in building the sport in the Caribbean region.

The highlight of the night, though, was the appearance of American professional bodybuilding champion Kai Greene, recent winner of both the 2009 Arnold Classic and Australian Pro Grand Prix ’09.

A truly big man, carrying 298 pounds of packed muscle, Greene donned a Legacy mas band costume and proved surprisingly nimble as he put down some raunchy moves to a variety of music, including soca.

Greene certainly would not have looked out of place at the Shabba Ranks concert taking place later on the night at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

To the delight of the majority female audience, the man put down some dance moves, showing off tree-trunk legs that had taken him some 22 years of hard training to build.

He was indeed an example to local competitors as to how far they have to go to compete on the world stage.

However, there is certainly hope for Caribbean bodybuilding. Rarely has novice competition produced such impressive athletes as the three who competed on Saturday.

The winner, Trinidad and Tobago’s Francis Martin, was obviously competition-ready and almost as big as a light-heavyweight. Runner-up Jason Gilbert of Barbados also put in some work, while

T&T’s Shevon Simpson was not as muscled, but made a good competitive start.

Tamara Ribero-Bailey maintained a high standard in the women’s body-fitness tall class and was the obvious winner, but some believed that in the short class the harder, more streamlined body of obviously-disappointed Barbadian Jamilla Secumbe had won out over T&T’s Michelle Alleyne. But the judges said otherwise.

"Spiderman" Diaz looked lucky as he completed a hat-trick in the men’s fitness category. While Diaz was in prime physical form, his main challenger, "Red Man" Marvin Rohin, had by far the more innovative floor routine, and while Diaz was doing cartwheels, Rohin was doing sommersaults. The result was debatable.

There was also disappointment for popular Trinidadian Zelus "Socks" Williams, who tried to mask his discontent when adjudged second to the tall, streamlined figure of La Ron Gibson of Barbados in the very, very competitive middleweight class.

There was also some surprise when T&T’s Damien George was only fourth in the same class, although George may have suffered from an overall lack of size and also needed improvement in some areas, such as his lower back, legs and oblique muscles.

There were also a couple of competitors who did not meet basic standards, the worst being Barbados women’s bodybuilder Rasheda Belgrave, who is simply not ready for competition. Bajan Nikkita Robinson did nothing special in the women’s open fitness category, but she was the only one there.

Likewise Trinidadian heavyweight Garfield Edwards needed to look harder at his diet and also to put in some more work in the gym. But, he at least has something to work with.

The night could not have been completed without the entertainers.

Patrick Harris (Barbados) wobbled his impressive abs like a belly dancer when winning the lightweight division. And St Kitts/Nevis’ Colin Lazarus made sure the judges saw none of the other competitors in the pose-down for the heavyweight title by deliberately blocking every pose they made.

And taking a cue from Lazarus, when contesting the pose-down for the overall title, "skinny man" lightweight champ Harris tip-toed across the stage in comical fashion to block every pose that eventual champ Daniel made.

He had the crowd rolling in hearty laughter.

Grenadian Kirani James created history on Sunday’s final day of the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships here at the Sports Arena.

The tall lanky 16-year-old from the Spice Island of Grenada in the eastern Caribbean became the first youth to win a 200/400m double.

He completed the double by taking the 200m in a season best 21.05 to add to his 45.24 Championship record run in the 400m.

James joined Great Britain’s Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who won the sprint double (10.35) and 20.91) in 2005, as sprints double champions. In the girls’ events, Jodie Williams had secured the shorter 100/200 sprint double previously in the afternoon.

He expressed delight with his achievements. “I am feeling good, I’m elated,” he said.
He was not expected to win the 200m, but according to him, it was his hard work throughout the season, which brought this success.

“I am a little surprised, but kind of disappointed with my time. The 200m was more competitive, but I am very happy I pulled through,” he continued.

Unlike several other youth stars, James is not making any predictions about his feature.

“I am still a junior, will be a junior for the next two years, so right now I am just competing with the juniors”.

“I am just taking it one day at a time … my next target is the Pan Am Junior Championships later this month in Trinidad & Tobago, then I will start looking ahead to next year’s World Junior Championships,” explained James, who heads to University in United States next month.

Albert Joseph, who is James’ coach at Grenada Boys’ Secondary School, said his athlete has a bright feature.

“We are looking forward to 2010 Olympics in London,” said Joseph, who described James as someone who is “very dedicated to his training”

Now with the World Youths over, James said it’s time to meet more friends. “I am enjoying myself, it’s good here, I met a lot of friends, but mostly athletes from the other Caribbean countries.

“After the closing ceremony, I am hoping to make more international friends,” he added.

Robbie Rogers scored one goal and set up two more as the United States opened its Gold Cup campaign with a comfortable 4-0 win over Grenada at Qwest Field.

Freddie Adu opened the scoring in the eighth minute, while Stuart Holden added a second goal before the break. Rogers scored in the 60th minute to make it 3-0, and Charlie Davies capped the scoring eight minutes later.

The second game in group play for the United States will come on Wednesday against Honduras, which beat Haiti 1-0 on Saturday in its opening match.

Rogers was dangerous throughout the opening half as he delivered a number of good crosses from the left wing.

Rogers set up the first goal in the eighth minute when he carried the ball into the box and squared it to Adu, who struck a low shot first-time past goalkeeper Desmond Noel.

Davies almost doubled the lead in the 22nd minute when he poked a shot towards the far corner that Noel got down to stop, while Grenada’s best scoring opportunity arrived one minute later when Kithson Bain’s header forced a diving save from goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

Rogers then picked out an unmarked Holden in front of goal and he headed it home from close range in the 32nd minute to make it 2-0, while Adu turned a header on goal following another Rogers cross that forced Noel to tip the ball over the crossbar.

The second half started slowly but a nice run from Rogers through the midfield opened things up. He darted past a Grenada defender and stayed onside before taking a nice pass from Logan Pause and slotting his shot past Noel.

A long ball from the back by Chad Marshall led to the fourth goal for the U.S. as Heath Pearce got to it on the left wing and touched it into the path of Davies, who calmly rolled it into the bottom right corner.

Adu was denied by the post in the 71st minute, while Davy Arnaud made Noel produce a good save minutes later as the U.S. was in complete control throughout.
