Published: Sat, 2011-07-16 20:00

Jamaica won the 2011 regional under-15 cricket crown with a four-wicket victory over Barbados in the fifth and final round of the tournament yesterday at UTT’s ground in Omera. The Jamaicans finished the round-robin tournament with 40.1 points to claim the title. T&T finished second with 34.6 points after their win over the Leewards in their match. The Guyana, Windwards match ended in a draw with the former finishing third. Yesterday, Barbados resuming on 57/6 in their second innings were bowled out for 79 with Christopher Tufton 3/10, Ramaal Lewis 3/22 and Hakeem Wright 2/11 doing the damage. Jamaica then made a meal of the victory target but got home at 78/6. Spinner Chad Williams took 4/22 to finish the match with 12 wickets.

T&T was also in winning form and easily took care of the Leewards at Honeymoon Park. Resuming yesterday on 120 for seven the Windwards crashed to 134 all out. Shawn Tuitt fought a lone battle getting an unbeaten 91, while Shane Smith 3/28, Jesse Bootan 3/15 and Camillo Carimbocus 2/3 ensured T&T had an easy target. The hosts then got the winning target at 126 for four with Brian Christmas getting 44 and Jeremy Solozano 36. Going into the final day, Guyana still had a chance of lifting the title but fell away after stubborn resistance from the Windwards. Tagnarine Chanderpaul struck his second fifty of the match to take them to 254 for seven off 60 overs. This left the Windwards with a victory target of 267 runs held out for the draw at 199/8. Chad Phillip stroked 56 and Gidron Pope 45. The pick of the Guyanese bowlers was the consistent Steven Sankar with 4/66.

Stacy Ann King and Kirbyina Alexander helped Trinidad and Tobago’s cricket women hammer Wales yesterday by 194 runs to extend their win streak on their tour of England.

At the Newport International Sports Village at Spytty Park in Newport, King bashed 108 runs off just 55 balls, and was well supported by Kirbyina Alexander, who finished unbeaten on 92 off 78 balls after T&T chose to bat.

Amanda Samaroo (41) and Lee Ann Kirby (32) also contributed with the bat, as T&T finished on 339 for seven at the end of their 50 overs.

Gamma Mumby was the only Welsh bowler to finish with more than one wicket, with good figures of three for 41 from her ten overs.

Wales never got going in their turn at the crease, with Stephanie Davis’s 37 being their topscore, while Amy Rees also chipped in with 19.

The main reasons the Welsh failed to mount a challenge were the miserly figures of Gaitri Seetahal (two wickets for nine runs in 7.2 overs) and Anisa Mohammed (two for 13 in nine overs). Wales were dismissed for 145 in 46.2 overs.

Alexander and Samaroo also took a wicket each.

T&T had previous defeated Sussex Ladies by four wickets on the weekend and a combined Gloucestershire/Wiltshire team by 119 runs on Monday.

Summarised scores:

T&T 339/7 in 50 overs (Stacy Ann King 108, Kirbyina Alexander 92 n.o., Amanda Samaroo 41, lee Ann Kirby 32; Gamma Mumby 3/41, Naomi Williams Wadley 1/14, Fiona Cartwright 1/48, Stephanie Davis 1/62, Gwen Davis 1/35) vs Wales 145 all out in 46.2 overs (Stephane Davis 37, Amy rees 19; Gaitri Seetahal 2/9, Anisa Mohammed 2/13, Janelle Samuel 1/36, Nicole George 1/19, Kirbyina Alexander 1/23, Amanda Samaroo 1/24)

Windward Islands kept their composure to complete a four-wicket victory over Guyana, after Veerasammy Permaul and Davendra Bishoo threatened to derail them in the WICB Regional first-class championship yesterday.

Chasing 58 for victory, the Windwards’ vulnerability to spin bowling was cruelly exposed by Permaul and Bishoo before the home team reached their target about 55 minutes after lunch on the third day of their third round match at Kensington Oval.

Off-spinner Permaul took three wickets for 16 runs from 12.1 overs, and leg-spinner Bishoo captured three for 20 from 12 overs to leave Windwards wobbling on 35 for six in the first half-hour after lunch.

But Garey Mathurin swung a delivery from Permaul through mid-wicket for the last of his boundaries to formalise the victory for the Windwards.

The result meant that Windwards gained 12 points and move to 19, and Guyana gained no points and remain on seven.

West Indies off-spinner Shane Shillingford has been banned from international cricket due to an illegal bowling action.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement yesterday that an analysis on Shillingford’s bowling action confirmed an elbow extension of 17 degrees — beyond the 15 degrees level permitted under cricket’s laws.

Professor Bruce Elliott from the University of Western Australia performed the independent analysis. The ICC said Shillingford could appeal against the ban within 14 days.

The off-spinner was reported by onfield umpires Steve Davis and Richard Kettleborough, along with television umpire Asad Rauf, after the Test against Sri Lanka at Galle last month.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said it had received the report on Shillingford’s action.

“The WICB and the Team Management Unit remain confident in his ability to perform at the highest level and see this latest development as a challenge which has been placed before him,” WICB chief executive Dr Ernest Hilaire said in a statement.

“Shane is a tough cricketer who arrived on the international stage via the difficult route after years of toil on the regional circuit. We have no doubt that he will emerge from this test of his character.”

Hinds is no captain, says Powell – - JamaicaObserver.com

WAVELL Hinds’ appointment as captain of Jamaica’s team for the regional 20/20 championship next month has been firmly knocked down by his former clubmate, Jamaica and West Indies representative Daren Powell.

Hinds, 34, was appointed to lead the Gus Logie-coached Jamaica last Thursday, following a series of ‘trial’ matches held to select the squad. Hinds was preferred to regular captain Tamar Lambert who was not selected for the squad as Jamaica attempt to win their first 20/20 title.

Powell, 32, who returned from County cricket in England toward the latter part of this year, was bruising in his comments when asked by the Sunday Observer to reflect on the appointment.

“Wavell is not cut out to be a captain. I have said it to him to his face and I have said it to other players. I don’t think that he has the qualities to lead a team which includes youngsters who are looking forward to moving up.

“He didn’t have a good 20/20 tournament last year… he did not perform, so based upon what he did and what he has done since, he should not even make the team as a player this time.

“With him in the team, he is stifling some youngsters who want to play and make it to the West Indies team, youngsters like Nkrumah Bonner and Andre McCarthy,” said Powell, a native of St Elizabeth.

Hinds declined to say much on Powell’s view when contacted yesterday.

“That’s okay, I really don’t want to comment,” said Hinds, a veteran of 45 Tests, 119 one-day internationals and five 20/20 outings for the West Indies.

Fast bowler Powell, who has played with the left-handed batsman and right-arm medium pacer Hinds for several years at the East Kingston-based club Kensington, has made no secret of his lack of fondness of Hinds’ leadership style in previous years.

He said he would have been happier if the selectors had opted for fellow Kensington player David Bernard Jnr as captain following what he described as Bernard’s fairly good performance while leading the West Indies ‘A’ team in their recent series with Pakistan.

He was also not too happy with the treatment meted out to Lambert, but said he could understand the thinking behind that.

“If Lambert is not in, why not appoint Bernard Jnr, who did not do a bad job as ‘A’ team captain? Why go for Wavell who did nothing when he was the regular captain of Jamaica?

“While I can understand that Lambert may be better suited for the four-day game, why treat a player who has done so much for Jamaica over the years in that way? I wonder what the (Jamaica Cricket) Board is doing for our cricket when they go back for Wavell,” Powell said.

Powell, who said he has not retired from first-class or international cricket, but was staying away from the scene based upon “things that were happening”, also suggested Marlon Samuels as a possible captain.

Samuels returned from a two-year ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) last May for his contact with an Indian businessman whom the ICC described as a bookmaker .

Samuels has since represented Jamaica in a tournament in Florida, as well as the regional 50-over championship here last October, until injury floored him and limited his participation.

“Marlon Samuels has proven that he can lead a Jamaica team,” Powell said. “I was a player on the Jamaica team and I know the capabilities of the players. Once Marlon can put aside some of the negatives and focus more on the positives, he can lead any team. Jamaica should look to Marlon as a future captain.

“The players know that Wavell is not a captain, but they’re afraid of speaking out because of the man that he is and the Board can be vindictive. It is time to stop the favouritism,” said Powell, who has played 37 Tests, 55 one-day internationals and five 20/20 matches for the West Indies.

POWELL… the players know Wavell is not a captain, but they’re afraid of speaking out

A stroke-filled innings from Jermaine Blackwood ensured defending champions Jamaica came away with a draw against Trinidad and Tobago in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge yesterday.

Blackwood struck 12 fours and four sixes in an unbeaten 90 from 81 balls in just under two hours as Jamaica, chasing 251 for victory, reached 165 for six in their second innings. T&T, leading by 41 on first innings, had declared their second innings on 209 for five about 45 minutes before tea in a vain pursuit of victory.

The result meant that T&T earned six points and Jamaica just three. Guyana top the standings with 12 points after their win against the Leewards

West Indies A were upstaged in the fourth match of the Tri-Nation Series yesterday, when Cheteshwar Pujara scored 114 to set India A up for a 53-run victory.

West Indies A were left to rue their decision of choosing to field on a flat Grace Road pitch, when Pujara, the India A captain, struck 12 boundaries in his 90-ball innings to lead his side to 340 for six from their allocation of 50 overs.

Darren Bravo, the brother of senior West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, then smote eight fours in 83 from 104 balls, as West Indies were restricted to 287 for seven from their 50 overs.

Bravo was involved in two half-century partnerships that kept West Indies A in the hunt, after they wobbled to 72 for three in the 13th over.

The left-hander added 61 for the fourth wicket with fellow leftie Assad Fudadin, and 70 for the fifth wicket with Andre Russell.

Fudadin made 26 from 51 balls, and Russell continued his impressive form with the bat, stroking four fours and two sixes in 49 from 31 balls.

When Russell was bowled, and became the last of Abhimanyu Mithun’s three wickets for 49 runs from nine overs, West Indies-A needed 120 from the last 10 overs.

Stand-in captain Dave Bernard Jr joined Kevin Stoute, and put on 61 for the seventh wicket before he was run out in the penultimate over for 33. Stoute was not out on 30.

Earlier, West Indies knew they faced a long, hard grind, when Shikhar Dhakar scored 59 from 42 balls including eight fours and two sixes, and fellow Abhinav Mukund made 36 in an opening stand of 95.

Russell made the breakthrough in the 13th over, and Lionel Baker had Mukund caught behind in the 16th over to leave India on 106 for two.

But West Indies failed to take control of the match, as Pujara followed up his 73 in Thursday’s defeat to England Lions (England A) with a match-winning innings, and Ajinkya Rahane collected nine fours and one six from 101 balls, allowing India to compile a formidable total.

Russell and Baker finished with two wickets apiece.

India A claimed four points from their win, which took them one behind West Indies A with one match remaining apiece.

England Lions still head the standings on eight points having played one game fewer.

West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach moved up a whopping nine places to 38th spot when the International Cricket Council Test bowling rankings this week.

The pacy Barbadian who celebrates his 22nd birthday Wednesday, played in two matches and ended the series six wickets at 31 runs per wicket. He took five wickets in the third Digicel Test Series against South Africa. His best bowling effort was 3-22 during a hostile spell in the second innings of the third Digicel Test. Overall he now has 26 wickets in seven Test at an average of 29.

West Indies’ left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn also made a climb up the ranking following his very good performances. The 28-year-old took 15 wickets in the three Tests – the most in the series – to jump three places to 31st position. Benn’s wickets came at 30 runs each and he had career-best figures of 6-81 in the third Digicel Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados. During the match Benn reached his 50th wicket in his 15th match.

The performance in the third Digicel Test was his third five-wicket haul in the last five Test matches. Benn also had a good series with the bat in the lower order making 101 runs at 20 runs per innings, including a Test-best 42 in the second innings of the first Digicel Test in Trinidad.
West Indies veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul was already in the top 10 and his efforts with the bat in what was a losing cause for the Windies earned him another three places as he settles in sixth position.

His innings of 22 and 71 not out in the third Digicel Test have moved him ahead of Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis in a log that is still headed by India’s Virender Sehwag. Chanderpaul made the highest score of the Digicel Series – 166 in the second match at Warner Park in St Kitts to end the series with 300 runs at an average of 75. Overall he now has 8969 runs in his 126-match career.

The West Indies rallied from a disappointing start to exact a comfortable 31 run victory over Ireland in their Digicel-sponsored Jamaica Cricket Festival match-up at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium on Sunday.

The regional team recovered from three for 10 to post a competitive 143 for eight in their 20 overs, scoring 80 runs in their last six overs, with Narsingh Deonarine top-scoring with an even 40 runs off 32
balls. The Windies then limited Ireland to 112 for 7 to seal the win.

Deonarine, who also dominated play in Saturday’s clash against Canada, struck one four and three sixes in his innings that was by and large the precursor to the West Indies triumph.

The Irish seemed to have the upper hand on their ICC World Twenty20 opponents during the early exchanges after Andre Fletcher (six), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (one) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (two) were all removed cheaply.

Darren Bravo (19), stand-in captain Darren Sammy (26) and Wavell Hinds (21) all made valuable contributions towards the West Indies revival.

Trent Johnston was the chief wicket-taker for the Irish, with figures of two for 19 off his four overs while Paul Stirling snared one
for 13.

The Irish were however unable to build on their positive fielding displays when it was their turn to bat, and were pegged back from the very first over, with captain William Porterfield sent back into the pavilion for a duck off the third ball of the innings.

One wicket quickly became two after Niall O’Brien (three) was dispatched with the score at two for three, minutes before Gary Wilson (three) was removed with the Irish struggling on three for nine.

Stirling —who resisted with 25 runs off 35 balls— and Andrew White (16) rallied to push the total to 46 before Stirling was
removed to virtually spell the end for their efforts.

Sulieman Benn was the most successful bowler for the West Indies with a haul of two for 12, while Darren Sammy claimed two for 15. Ravi Rampaul bagged two for 19 while David Bernard Jr assisted with one for 17.

West Indies coach, Otis Gibson, was pleased with his team’s efforts and reserved special praise for Deonarine.

“This was obviously a better performance from the guys, we applied ourselves much better this time around even though we didn’t have a very good start,” said Gibson. “We did very well to get to 140 and that is always going to be a difficult target in this format of the game. I’m very happy with what we have seen from Deonarine, he is doing very well both with bat and ball.”

Ireland coach, Phil Simmons, blamed his team’s poor batting for the defeat but was encouraged by their efforts in the field.

“We didn’t bat well enough and that was the main issue. We had them at 40 for four or something like that before we allowed it to slip but overall we did well in the field. We should have gotten closer to their score so it’s a case where we have to do some work on our batting,” said Simmons.

The 26-year-old Edwards is strongly-built, has a bustling approach to the wicket and delivers with a high, powerful action.

He spent some seasons learning his trade on the league circuit in England and he has been on the fringe of the Barbados senior team for several years.

Edwards is expected to share the new ball with experienced left-arm pacer Pedro Collins.

The other changes in the 13-man squad see batsman Kyle Hope coming back to replace all-rounder Dwayne Smith, who is also in the Windies team to Australia.

Barbados are second in the standings on 21 points from three matches – 12 for their win over Combined Campuses and Colleges, six for first innings lead in the draw against Trinidad and Tobago, and three for the loss of first innings lead in the draw against the Leeward Islands.

Play in that WICB First-class match will start at 1:00 pm and it will be the second match this season using the pink ball, after the Trinidad and Tobago/Guyana second-round match in Antigua.
