Jamaica vs Trinidad 2-2

Filed Under (Jamaica, Soccer, Trinidad) by pwalker on 27-03-2008

After an exciting match that left the crowd with mixed emotions, the Jamaicans and Trinidadians have managed not to rub salt into the wound of their rivalry. After a devastating 2-0 start by the Jamaicans in the first half, the Trinidadians maintained composure and form to claw their way back unto even keel with the Jamaicans to end the match at 2-2.

The scoring started in the 34th minute when Phillips made a superb pass to an advancing King on the left who turned and curled a beautiful strike into goal. The second goal came from the Jamaican team captain, Tyrone Marshall, who latched unto a diagonal pass from Phillips and continued on goal with a slanted strike into the side netting to put the Jamaicans up 2.

The Trinidadians were not to be undone. Their maturity and composure showed through as on the 74th minute, their patience paid off with substitute Telesford slotting home a loose ball in the area. Aurtis salvaged the equalizer in extra time with a spectacular shot that beat substitute keep Duwayne Kerr.

A very special Olympian

A very special Olympian
Saturday, March 15th 2008

It’s a sunny Thursday morning and Ancil Greene is
teaching a class at St Michael’s Swimming Pool in San
Fernando. Dubbed “the instructor who can teach
anyone”, he’s trained children, adults, flight
attendants and boasts that he has even repaired a
couple of swimming pools. Some students come from as
far as Port of Spain to be coached by him. “Teaching
is not a problem for me,” he explained. “I have my own
method of teaching everyone. You will find that I can
teach some people faster than other instructors.” It’s
difficult to believe that the 31-year-old only started
swimming seriously seven years ago - when he got a job
as a pool attendant at St Michael’s.

Today, Greene is a lifeguard, an instructor, the
national triathlon champion and was nominated as
Sportsman of the Year. He took part in the Special
Olympics in 1995 and 1999 (he has been diagnosed with
attention-deficit disorder), winning two gold medals
and a silver. But Greene, who won the national
triathlon, a 1500m swim/40km cycle/10km run, in a time
of 2:15:20 last October, says he never thought he
would become an athlete. “I just wanted to be a
soldier or mechanic. Those were my dreams. However, I
guess I found my true passion in sport. I have
absolutely no regrets.”

Forde and Nicholls set Barbadian records at NCAA Championships

Filed Under (Barbados, Track and Field) by pwalker on 18-03-2008

FAYETTEVILLE, USA: Despite not finishing amongst the medalist in their respective events, Barbadians Seidre Forde and Shernelle Nicholls set national records at last weekend’s NCAA division I indoor championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, AR.

Forde, a junior at the University of Louisville, jumped 13.24m to set a triple jump record for her native Barbados and in the process became the first woman from her school to advance to the finals of an event at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She also improved her own Louisville school record in the process, but could
only finish in 10th place.

Also in this event, Jamaica’s Kimberly Williams of Florida State won the second flight of two and finished second overall behind Erica McLain with a jump of 13.82m. Williams’ was the longest triple jump performance in the school’s history

Meanwhile, Shernelle Nicholls, a four-time national champion in the women’s shot put, improved her own national record in the event when finishing 6th on the weekend.

Nicholls, on her 5th throw, tossed the shot to a school record mark of 16.71m and earned her second overall All-American honour.
