Trinidadand Tobago cyclist Gavyn Nero finished second among the juniors at the Barbados Junior and Juveniles Road Championships, recently. The winner of the 84-kilometre race was Jyme Bridges, of Antigua. More here

Windies bow out early of Twenty20

Bangladesh won by an emphatic six wicket win over the West Indies to knock them out of the Twenty20 series being held in Johannesburg. After they won the toss and elected to send the Windies in to bat. Limited to just 164/8. Led by captain Mohammad Ashraful, Bangladesh responded viciously, making 61 of 27 balls to reach their target with two overs to spare. Get the details here.

West Indies lose to South Africa

A ton from Chris Gayle was not enough to save the West Indies in its opening battle with hosts South Africa in the Twenty20 World cup. Bad bowling and sloppy fielding meant the West Indies were unable to defend their target of 206. Herschelle Gibbs sealed their fate with 90 from 55 balls despite a strained hamstring. Puerto Rico get FIBA Americas bronze

Puerto Rico, through a spirited performance by Elias Ayuso who scored 39 points, beat Brazil to cop the bronze medal at the FIBA Americas Olympic qualifying event. It was merely a contest of bragging rights, however, as both teams failed in their bid to qualify for the Beijing Olympics on this round. Puerto Rico can console themselves with a great performance with the team shooting 50% from the field. Get more details about the event here.

Powell runs new WR, 9.74s

As if to redeclare his relevance, Asafa Powell ran a new World Record of 9.74s at the Reiti Grand Prix in his heat. He then went on to win the final in 9.78s. Read more about his amazing performance here

Windies beat New Zealand

The West Indies seem unstoppable of late chalking up yet another win against rivals New Zealand. With an opening knock of 150/6 off 20 overs, the West Indies spearheaded their attack with Daren Powell who grabbed 3 for 4 off 4 overs. New Zealand never truly recovered from that start and were all out for 115 in just 18.4 overs. Get details here.

Windies outclass Kenyans

Marlon Samuels showed superb batting form as his half century carried West Indies to a resounding six wicket win over Kenya in their warm up match preluding the Twenty20 World Cup. Smashing 63 off 30 balls in search of Kenya’s 155 for 5, the Windies romped to their target with with 15 balls to spare. Read more here.

Bahamas get’s silver in 4×400 Men’s in Osaka

The Bahamas pulled a season best run of 2:59.18s to reel in the silver in the 4×400m relay, men’s. The team of Avard Moncur, Michael Mathieu, Andrae Williams, Chris Brown. They were bested by the United States in a World leading time of 2:55.56s.

The silver lining to the Osaka cloud

Jamaica rounded off its Osaka effort with 4 silver medals. Maurice Smith pulled one in for the Jamaicans in a relatively new sport to them, the decathlon. The 4×100 men and women’s team both pulled in silver as well and the 4×400 women’s team also pulled in a silver. That places Jamaica, at the end of the championships in 8th place just behind Australia and just ahead of it’s Caribbean compatriot the Bahamas.

In Osaka, Japan a new national record was established by the women of Jamaica in the 11th IAAF World Championships. Shericka Williams, Shereefa Lloyd, Novlene Williams and Davita Prendergast earned silver medals in the mile-relay. Shericka Williams pushed the team in an excellent first leg of 48.25secs making the total clock of three minutes 19.73 seconds.
