England won a tight 46-45 victory over Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls to win the best of three series 2-0. Jamaica who were beaten 52-32 in the opener made key tactical changes and fought tooth and nail to see a victory but had to settle for second best. The teams are using the series as preparation for the World Championships to be held in Auckland, New Zealand in November. Read more about the series here.
Some would think that it was a good thing Tyson gay didn’t show up in Stuttgart. Asafa Powell ran a blistering 9.83s into a 0.3m/s headwind there to break the Championship record he set and take the 100m. Even though Jaysuma Ndure of Norway ran a National record 10.06s he could only achieve second best. Rounding out the podium was Powell’s teammate Michael Frater who finished in 10.11s. Fast bowler Corey Colleymore has been chosen to lead the Bajans in to the upcoming KFC Cup. Conde Riley made the announcement at recent press conference. Colleymore seemed elated. He was quoted as saying:
“To captain your nation or your country is always an honour and I will try to do it to the best of my ability”.

The former West Indian all-rounder Otis Gibson has been called by England to serve as their bowling coach for its tours of Sri Lanka. The 38 year old will be touring with the team from October 1-13. Gibson has been phenomenal on the county circuit with Durham probably tipping the scales in his favor. Read more about his accomplishments here.

The world number 4 netball team, England, trounced the world number 3, Jamaica in the opener of their best of three series at the National Indoor Sports Center in Jamaica. The Jamaicans were handed a 20 point loss 52-32 by their English counterparts, the first time in about a year. Coach Francis expects that this will necessitate a change in the starting lineup as well as an analysis of how the team plays the fundamentals. Get more details about the game here.

With three gold medals in hand, Jamaica is making quite the stir at the Pan American Junior Badminton championships. Ten year old Sean Wilson was the pick of the lot after featuring in two such wins. The first medal coming from the defeat of American Timothy Lam for the Boy’s Under 11 singles title 21-16, 21-17 . Sean and his younger brother Shane went on to capture the Boy’s Under 11 doubles crown, defeating Guatemala’s Elmer Tello and Jorge Saucedo 21-9, 21-7. Read more here.
Running against a 0.3m/s headwind, Powell clocked 9.84s to capture the 100m at the Van Damme Golden League meet in Brussels. Clearly in a different league, Powell finished ahead of Norway’s Jaysuma Saidy Ndure (10.11s) and fellow MVP teammate Michael Frater (10.12). Get the scoop on the event here.
Clocking 11.11 seconds, Veronica Campbell tracked down the entire field to win the 100m final at the Van Damme Golden League meet in Brussels. Christine Aaron and Torri Edwards had to content themselves with second and third respectively albeit with the same time 11.22. Read more about them here
