Veronica Campell, the 100M World Champion, clocked a championship record 10.90 seconds to beat the Jamaican born American Sanya Richards in the 100M challenge at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix. Although Richards turned in a personal best and finished ahead of Carmelita Jeter of the USA in 10.97 it was not enough to catch Campbell. Jamaica’s Aleen Bailey and Bahamian Chandra Sturrup were fifth and sixth respectively in the same race.
In a surprising card switch, Jamaica’s Asafa Powell participated in the 200M at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix and won the event. He won going away from the crowd in a comfortable 20s. American Rodney Martin was second in 20.29 and fellow Jamaican Christopher Wiliams third in 20.39s. In a surprising twist, American World Champion Tyson Gay could only manage second to fellow American Wallace Spearmon. Powell was not slated to participate in the event. Read more about it here.
