John lauded for heroic effort

Roy Keane had nothing but confidence in his striker  Stern John after a last minute goal brought Sunderland level at 2-2 in the English Premiere League on Wednesday evening.

“I knew he’d score, because in the corridor here I saw a picture of him scoring as a Birmingham player…” said Keane.

Keane’s men salvaged the draw with only 10 men after the T&T midfielder Carlos Edwards limped off with a hamstring injury. John, who had come on as a substitute for David Conolly, created the saving goal by heading back in a parried save from a free kick.

CFU U15 defending champs forfeit!

Jamaica, the defending Caribbean Footbal Union’s Under 15 Cup champions will have to forfeit their title after last ditch efforts by the Jamaica Football Federation to get emergency visa appointments failed.

The tournament is scheduled to get underway in Trinidad on August 18, but the squad is effectively grounded as 13 out of the 22 members of the squad have no US visas. Initially the squad was expected to fly directly via Caribbean Airlines but lost their seats for lack of confirmation. Subsequent routes take them through the US but the squad was unable to secure visas to allow for same.

Atkins runs PB in Leverkusen

Atkins continued to show form and poise leading up to the IAAF World Championships in Japan when he clocked a personal best while running the 200m in a mete in Germany.

Atkins clocked 20.50 seconds to take the even in easy fashion. Finishing behind the Bahamian star was Chris Clarke (Britain) 20.87 while theird was Ingo Shultz (21.04).

Osaka showdown

The stage is now set for one of tracks biggest showdowns. With Gay clocking the season’s best time this year at 9.84, this has been a much hyped clash as Powell has put his world record on the line. The world championships are between August 25-September 2.

Darlington looks to have led them to Trinidad & Tobago
international Silvio Spann.

“We’re trying to tie up a transfer by the end of August but I’m keeping

names to myself for now,” upbeat manager Brian Careysaid after the defeat.

Wrexham’s website says that midfielder Spann is a target, but that terms with

the player and his club need sorting. Spann, under contract to Trinidad’s W

Warner plays blocker!

Jack Warner, the Trinidadian president of CONCACAF and FIFA vice-president has been quoted as saying that he would do all he could to prevent England hosting the 2018 World Cup

“There are moves to give it to England and I must fight that” he said.

This has resulted in a strong response from England’s FA. Geoff Thompson said they were “shocked and disappointed” by the comments. Check the story out here.

Powell wins again in Stockholm

Though not posting his usual impressive times. Jamaican Asafa Powell once again established himself as king of the 100m in Stockholm when he took the 100m championship ahead of rival Derrick Atkins. Many characterized it as a “scrape through” as Powell ran 10.04 to pip Atkins on the line. Powell said in the post race interview that he wasn’t feeling himself so he decided not to push it. Jamaica tops 200m field at Crystal Palace Grand Prix

Usain Bolt and Veronica Campbell left the Jamaican stamp on the Crystal Palace Grand Prix event when they captured the male and female 200m dash. Campbell outclassed the field to win in 22.55 seconds while Bolt held off a fast finishing Wallace Spearmon to take the event in 20.06.

Christian wins 200m Gold at Pan Am

Brendan Christian pulled out the stops to bring Antigua it’s first ever gold medal at the Pan Am games. Christian pushed forward at the tape to clock 20.37 seconds just ahead of Anderson from Jamaica in 20.38, the bronze going to American Rubin Williams in 20.57.  Read more here.

Sophia Young helps Stars shine

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines star forward Sophia Young had a great game scoring 22 points to pull the San Antonio Silver Stars into their first ever playoff berth. The 6′ 1″ Young scored 22 points pulled down 5 rebounds and dished out 2 assists in the sterling effort. Drafted fourth overall from Baylor, Young proved her mettle and the reason why she was named to the Wester Conference All Star’s team last year. Read more about her here.
