West Indies skipper Chris Gayle has jumped five spots in the recently released ODI batsmen LG ICC Player Rankings to number 11. Thanks to an average of 86.67 at bat for the last five innings, he now shares that spot with South Africa’s Jacques Kallis. Read the full story here

It’s official, the new elected head of the Barbados Cricket Association is former West Indian fast bowler Joel “Big Bird” Garner. He beat his closest rival Calvin Hope by 40 votes to secure the position. Windies Sports wishes him all the best in his venture.

Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 team booked their place in the final of the 2007 Sir Garry Sobers International Schools Tournament with an eight-wicket victory over Barbados Cricket League Juniors (BCL) at Crab Hill, Barbados yesterday. BCL Juniors batted first and were restricted to 165 all out, with Antonio Greenidge (44) and Sanal Lewis (31) putting up most of the resistance. Ameer Khan emerged as T&T’s best bowler, picking up four wickets for 20 runs and helping to dismiss BCL Juniors in the 39th over.
In reply, Trinidad and Tobago’s Yannic Cariah again led with the bat, scoring 89 runs and sharing in an unbroken 99-run third-wicket partnership with Javed Boodram, who scored 43 not out.Cariah blasted eight fours and three sixes in his knock, while Boodram’s supporting role included seven boundaries that helped T&T reach 166/2 off 35.1 overs. Jamaica’s 200m star Usain Bolt showed that he can also shine in the
shortest track race. Faced with a group of elite American sprinters,
Bolt managed a personal best of 10.03 to win the first of two heats,
well ahead of Leroy Dixon who clocked 10.07, with another 200m star,
Wallace Spearmon third with 10.20.
No one produced a faster time than the Jamaican tonight, as J.J.
Jonhson won the second heat with a season’s best 10.10, followed by
Trinidad’s Marc Burns and Jamaica’s Christopher Williams, both clocked
10.22.

When 17-year-old Shane Brathwaite completed the Boys Octathlon here in Ostrava with a new personal best record of 6261 points he became not only Barbados’ first World Youth champion but his country’s first ever athletics gold medal winner in a global competition at any level.
The Caribbean island’s best result at a senior outdoor global competition was sprinter Obadele Thompson’s bronze medal winning performance in Sydney 2000 Olympic Games where he clocked 10.04 to finish third in the men’s 100m final.

The Caribbean mined 4 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals at the 5th IAAF World Athletics Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Stellar golden performances were displayed by Jamaica’s Dexter Lee in the boys 100m and Ramone McKenzie in the boys 200m, Cuba’s Dailenis Alcantara in the girls triple jump, and Barbados’ Shane Brathwaite in the boys octathlon.
Brathwaite became Barbados first ever World Champion in any age group, with a personal best record of 6261 points.

Nivea Smith lands bronze behind to be Bahamas only medal winner at the recently held 5th IAAF World Junior Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic. In a time of 23.69 sec, though not her personal best it was good enough for a medal and her fastest time at the meet.
Bahamas was one of 5 Caribbean countries to have medaled at the event.

Argentina got the shock of their lives on July 14, when the much maligned Reggae Boyz of Jamaica handed them a 2-0 upset in their Group C encounter to give Jamaica it’s first three points in the tournament. Kemmar Daley provided the strike in the 80th and 90th minutes. With the win against Columbia under the belt, Jamaica is all but guaranteed a place in the semi finals. Read more about it here.
