For those of you who don’t follow Formula One motor racing, F1 added it’s first ever black driver, Lewis Hamilton from Britain. You might be wondering, why is this worthy of note on Windies Sports? His paternal grandparents are from Grenada! Not only that, he’s so good that they’ve hailed him as the Tiger Woods of Formula One.His debut race he finished third, only the fourteenth driver to finish on the podium on his debut. Even more astounding, he recently eclipsed Bruce McLaren to become the youngest driver ever to lead the world championship. Read more about him here.

Jamaica became the first Caribbean nation in 28 years to reach the finals of the Pan American Games Men’s Football Tournament after defeating Mexico on penalty kicks 5:4. Read more here.

Sheldon Bissessar earned the top world record for the 1/4mile with an ET of 6.45 seconds at Rockingham Dragway, Rockingham, North Carolina. He made history with the fastest time racing with gas and nitrous using a converter instead of a clutch engaged transmission. Read more here
Deno Merrick, a native of Willikies Village in Antigua and Barbuda was named the new head men’s and women’s soccer coach for Missouri Baptist University in an announcement by Director of Athletics for that institution Thomas Smith. Being assistant coach for the past two years, Merrick said of the challenge:
“I hope that I can carry on the tradition of success with the men’s team and bring some success and stability to the women’s team.”

Jamaica’s youth football team made it 3 wins from 3 starts at the Pan American Games when they trounced Haiti 4 - 0 to top Group C. After a rather aggressive match that saw both teams ending with 10 men on the field, Jamaica came out the victors when James Thomas scored in the 2nd and 18th minute. This was followed by superb strikes from Kemmar Daley in the 26th and Ricardo Cousins in the 67th. They now face Mexico in the first semi final of the tournament on Tuesday.

The countdown is on to the 39th annual Carib Great Race. The race is one of the longest offshore powerboat events in the world. The powerboats will make their way from Pier One in Trinidad all the way to Store Bay in Tobago. Check out the details on the Trinidad and Tobago Powerboat Association’s website
