For those of you who don’t follow Formula One motor racing, F1 added it’s first ever black driver, Lewis Hamilton from Britain. You might be wondering, why is this worthy of note on Windies Sports? His paternal grandparents are from Grenada! Not only that, he’s so good that they’ve hailed him as the Tiger Woods of Formula One.His debut race he finished third, only the fourteenth driver to finish on the podium on his debut. Even more astounding, he recently eclipsed Bruce McLaren to become the youngest driver ever to lead the world championship. Read more about him here.

U-20 Reggae Boyz reach final

T&T Bissessar holds Dragster World Record

Sheldon Bissessar earned the top world record for the 1/4mile with an ET of 6.45 seconds at Rockingham Dragway, Rockingham, North Carolina. He made history with the fastest time racing with gas and nitrous using a converter instead of a clutch engaged transmission. Read more here

T&T Hockey team lose to golden goal

Yesterday Trinidad and Tobago’s Field Hockey team endured a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat to Canada in the semi-final round of the Pan American Games men’s hockey tournament at the Field Hockey Centre, here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday. At the end of regulation time, the teams were deadlocked at 3-3, forcing the umpires to extend the match into sudden-death extra-time. And with less than five minutes to go in the additional 15-minute period of play, Wayne Fernandes scored to send the Canadians into Wednesday’s final. For more read here.

Lara to make comeback in new Indian league

Former West Indies skipper Brian Lara will come out of retirement to play in an unofficial Indian cricket league to be launched later this year, its organisers said yesterday.”We’ve signed up Lara, he will be playing and captaining one of the teams,” Himanshu Mody, business head of Zee Sports, told Reuters.

“You can’t keep me too far from cricket and hence I return to the game in this exciting new avatar,” Lara said in a statement issued by the Essel Group, promoters of the ICL.

T&T’s Bovell wins Bronze, earns record haul for T&T

Trinidad and Tobago’s George Bovell III won bronze in the men’s 50-metre freestyle swimming finals, becoming the first of his countrymen to earn five individual Pan Am Games medals. Bovell finished in a fast 22.36 seconds, setting a new national record and yesterday, at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Park here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 24-year-old was crowned T&T Pan Am Games King.

“I’m very happy,” the Athens Olympics 200m individual medley bronze medallist told the Express, shortly after yesterday’s race.

Antiguan named head soccer coach

Deno Merrick, a native of Willikies Village in Antigua and Barbuda was named the new head men’s and women’s soccer coach for Missouri Baptist University in an announcement by Director of Athletics for that institution Thomas Smith. Being assistant coach for the past two years, Merrick said of the challenge:

“I hope that I can carry on the tradition of success with the men’s team and bring some success and stability to the women’s team.”

Young Reggae Boyz top group

Jamaica’s youth football team made it 3 wins from 3 starts at the Pan American Games when they trounced Haiti 4 - 0 to top Group C. After a rather aggressive match that saw both teams ending with 10 men on the field, Jamaica came out the victors when James Thomas scored in the 2nd and 18th minute. This was followed by superb strikes from Kemmar Daley in the 26th and Ricardo Cousins in the 67th. They now face Mexico in the first semi final of the tournament on Tuesday.

Great Race for August 26

The countdown is on to the 39th annual Carib Great Race. The race is one of the longest offshore powerboat events in the world.
